One way in which students use tablet computing at U Prep is to record their own “explainer videos” in which they demonstrate their process or knowledge on a given topic. This is inline with one of our school-wide Professional Development goals to make thinking and learning visible in order to work on critical thinking and problem solving. This example uses an iPad app called Explain Everything to record a student working through an end-of-year project.
6th grade Math teacher Meg Shortell explains:
This video was an assessment (which we called “PE’s” last year) for one-step equations. The students drew equations out of a hat and then they created videos of themselves explaining how to solve them. I told them to use the video to “teach” me how to solve the equation so the best videos included strategies and justifications for steps.
